The Only New Year’s Resolutions You Need To Make This Your Best Year Ever!

This is the year you are going to make it happen. You have thought long and hard about your New Year’s resolutions and now you are ready to get on track. You are going to lose weight, eat better, reduce your stress, take better care of yourself, worry less, spend more time with friends and family, get out of debt, stop to smell the roses, check off all the items on your bucket list and solve world hunger. Wait a minute – didn’t you make those same resolutions last year? Then why haven’t you completely transformed your life this past year?

Resolutions Can Be Life Changing

As human beings, we are constantly trying to keep things just the way they are. We love homeostasis. We naturally resist change. Change is hard. Change is uncomfortable and unnatural. Then, the New Year hits and we try to change everything that needs to change all at once. It is too much. It is unsustainable. Then, before long, we just go back to doing things the way we always did them. However, your life does not have to stay like this.

2018 can be your turning-point year. This can be the year where you really make some incredible life changes and achieve those resolution goals. However, if you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you already have. You cannot try to do a complete 180-degree turn with your life. You need a different approach. One that actually works.

Instead of trying to change everything all at once, just make one small, simple-but-powerful change.

Then, keep doing (or not doing) that one thing until it becomes a habit. Yes, at first it will require willpower and discipline. However, if you start with something manageable, you can stick with it. In time, it will become a habit. It may take a week or a few months. Once it is a normal part of your life, it will not require much discipline or willpower to keep doing. Then, you can use the discipline and willpower to tackle your next high-impact habit.

Now, I know what you are thinking: “If I take things that slow I’ll never get to where I want to be!” I get it. We all want it all and we all want it now. That is why every January we try to bite off more than we can even get in our mouths (let alone chew). That is why we never really make substantial change. That is why keep making the same resolutions each year. At some point, we have the face brutal facts and ask that famous Dr. Phil question: “How’s that workin’ for ya?”

We also need to recognize that it may not take as long as we think it will – if we pick the right habits to tackle. One of my favorite books I listened to in 2017 was the The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results” by Gary Keller and‎ Jay Papasan. If you have not read it, I highly recommend it. In it, the authors challenge you to ask yourself the following question:

“What’s the one thing I can do for my (fill in the blank here with whatever area you want to work on: family, health, career, finances, etc.) such that by doing so everything else becomes easier or unnecessary?”

The key is to stop, take some time and really think this through. The cool thing is that when you do this and you nail a habit in one area of your life, it has a positive spin-off into other areas of your life. For example, maybe you decide that your first one thing to tackle is exercise.

So, you get a Curastream membership (great – you just saved yourself time AND money) and you start to exercise regularly.

Instead of doing what most people do and trying to hit the gym seven days a week in January, you start with 2-3 days a week from the privacy and convenience of your home. Because you are not also trying to change a million other things, you stick with it.

Before long, you start to feel better. You are stronger, fitter and you have lost some weight. Now, not only are you starting to adapt to a new habit, you are starting to actually want to exercise because you like how it makes you feel. Then, you start to notice the other positive spin-off effects. Your mood is improving and your family enjoys you more because you are a happier person to be around. You sleep better at night. Your blood pressure is lower. You are self-confidence has improved and you are more comfortable around other people. Your energy levels increase and you are more productive at work. Soon, every area of your life has been positively affected by your one single habit.

Now, you are ready to adopt another habit. Here are just a few of the countless examples you could try:

  • Keep a log of every penny you spend – you will end up better off financially
  • Eat slow – you will enjoy your food more, digest it better and eat less
  • Check your email less – you will get more done at work
  • Learn to say no to some things so you can say yes to your one thing
  • Keep a gratitude journal and write down things you are thankful for – it will reduce your stress and make you a happier, more positive person
  • Have one quality conversation per day with an important person in your life – you will be glad you did
  • Spend time each day in prayer and/or meditation

Curastream-resolutions-trainingWhen 2018 wraps up and you start looking ahead to 2019, you will no doubt still have a long list of resolutions you would like to make. That is fine. After all, success is a journey, not a destination.

However, if you follow this approach you will be able to look back on 2018 and be deeply satisfied with how far you have come this year.
